Fortunately… with Fi and Jane

What I’ve been listening to recently:

No212: Underpants Pyres, Death and Dying with Kathryn Mannix

BBC broadcasters Fi Glover and Jane Garvey chat away putting the world to right in this podcast that covers all topics from serious public headlines to frivolous private aspects of their lives. The conversations share personal moments, highlights from the news, listener comments, guest interviews and seemingly mundane daily matters covering everything from pet problems to menopausal side-effects.

In this episode, the first 20 minutes includes Jane sharing a cat fur printer problem and a recent missing HRT patch story whilst Fi recounts an embarrassing playground dash. Then it’s time for the guest who is the popular end of life author and former palliative care doctor Kathryn Mannix who joins the duo and draws on her experiences of treating terminally ill patients to talk about death and dying.

The podcast covers many useful topics relating to death and dying including:

  • Emotions that come up when clearing out someone’s things.

  • Why it’s so important to discuss our end of life wishes.

  • What we might expect at end of life.

  • How to have “tender conversations” with others.

  • What it is like to witness a death.

  • Common conversations with dying loved ones.

The podcast’s banter may not be for everyone but the two friends’ honesty is refreshing. I enjoy listening to their matey conversations whilst I potter at home cooking or doing the laundry. If you feel like eavesdropping on two great friends talking about all-sorts then this is a good podcast for you!

End of life conversations are vital because “we don’t know how long we’ve got to go.”

If you loved this and want to try another Fortunately podcast why not try No 215 with children’s author Jacqueline Wilson talking about her writers life, the children she has inspired, her attitude of seizing the day, why she thinks childhood does not define you and why she loves life in her 70s!
